Diary
Edmundo came from somewhere far enough away that the other blades still call him gaijin with a grin, but the shrine outside the Dojo made no such distinctions the night he showed up starving and half-frozen, and it fed him chicken until his ribs ached worse than his pride. He tells it like scripture now, dry as the sake he swears he'll quit tomorrow: how the offering plates kept refilling, how some old priest just watched him eat like it was a sacred rite instead of a hungry stranger cleaning house. By dawn he was too full to lift a blade properly, yet somehow that was the exact moment the Dojo elders decided he had the stomach, literally, for this life, and let him in. He wears that story like armor, loyal to a fault, watchful at the gate he guards, still trying to relearn the discipline he traded for a feast, one honest bow and one broken diet at a time. Ask him if he regrets it and he'll just pat his belly, shrug in that foreign way of his, and say the chicken was worth the war he never quite finished fighting against himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
