Edmundo came from somewhere far off the old maps, but he chose the Dojo anyway, and he guarded its steaming onsen the way a man guards the one good decision in his life. Discipline was simple back then: shovel, bucket, the honest poop of stable horses, no opinions required of him. Then Haru sank into the water beside him one humid evening, talking of floors and rugs and moonlit schemes, and Edmundo, against every oath he'd sworn to himself, actually listened, then answered, then agreed to something he still cannot fully recall. He tells himself he will return to silence tomorrow, to the clean arithmetic of shovel and bucket, but tomorrow keeps arriving with Haru already talking. Now he stands watch over steam and gossip alike, dry-eyed and faithful, aching for the honest stink of a stable he was too foolish to appreciate while he had it.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
