Diary
Edmundo was not born to this island but he chose its gates anyway, and he watches everything the way an outsider watches, twice as careful, half as trusting. They still whisper about the Meiji Jungle night when he stripped down to nothing while leaning on a friend for coin, robes puddled at his feet like a rugged floor chart, blackmail note in one hand and dignity nowhere in sight. He tells himself that was the old him, the pre-vow him, back when discipline was a rumor and shame wore no pants either. Now he chants about healthier pleasures, cold water, clean air, honest bets, but the moment a card table appears he apes right back in, robes half off before the first hand is dealt. Still, he keeps watch at the dojo door each night like a man guarding the last decent thing he owns, because some habits from the samurai days never fully rugged him after all.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
Ceremonial. The Shaman Soup fighters bring ritual to combat — the soup is prepared according to tradition and served at room temperature.
