Edmundo had guarded worse posts than Degens Path, foreign steel on foreign soil, and he liked to think that gave him license to crack wise about the locals, Itsuki included. The joke about Itsuki's sake-stained topknot landed exactly once, hilariously, right before the dojo elders decided a gatekeeper who mocks the regulars is a gatekeeper without a gate to keep. He walked off that job still laughing, the way a man laughs when the alternative is admitting he liked the paycheck more than the punchline. Now he sits at the edge of the path he used to watch, dry-eyed and broke, telling himself this is discipline too, patience, waiting for the next post to open, though the flask in his coat says otherwise. Somewhere in him the old soldier still stands guard, arms crossed, disapproving, and somewhere closer to the surface the new Edmundo just shrugs and asks what Itsuki's drinking tonight.”
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Half the statement. The Skull Sleeve fighters communicate their philosophy in one arm — the other arm is for whatever needs doing next.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Formal vision. The Spectacles fighters approached clarity with the same seriousness they bring to everything else — completely.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
