Diary
Edmundo wasn't born to these islands, but he chose the post outside those shoji doors the way a man chooses a temple, and that's exactly why he remembers every detail of the night he shed his clothes and, in the same breath, betrayed his family. Other guards look away when they mention it; Edmundo just refills his cup and stares at the paper screens like they might finally confess something back. He tells recruits it was discipline that undid him, some ancient code whispering that a man must stand bare before he can stand honest, though he privately suspects it was just the sake and a bet he was too proud to walk back from. Now he keeps his katana oiled and his robe re-tied twice before every watch, a small ritual against repeating the unrepeatable, and it works right up until someone offers him a joint and a reason to forget the doors again. Loyal to a house that isn't his blood, haunted by a night he can't unwitness, Edmundo has never been the same, and honestly, watching him try to be, neither have the shoji doors.
Simple. Carved. Someone made this by hand. The Wooden Loop fighters wear something made, not bought, and consider that a statement worth making.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
The organization runs deep. The Peony Yakuza Sleeve fighters have commitments that predated the Dojo and will outlast it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Snapped, but still swung. The Broken Naginata fighters lost half the reach and none of the conviction — they simply stand closer now.
