Edmundo came from somewhere far off the maps the old sensei drew, but he chose this dojo anyway, and that counted for something even after the sakura incident. Everyone knew the story by now: how he'd knelt beneath the blossoms with a shovel instead of a sword, convinced some drunk gambler's tale about buried koban glinting under the roots, and how all he'd unearthed was a rusted sake flask and a lecture on honor he still recites in his own flat, foreign cadence. He calls it his rug pull, the ground itself rugging him, and laughs about it dry as gravel while everyone else winces. Since then he's devoted himself to Buddha with the same stubborn watchfulness he brings to guarding the gate, sitting seiza until his knees scream, though he still eyes every fallen petal like it might be hiding yield. Discipline, for Edmundo, is a border he patrols nightly and loses to by morning, one incense stick and one broken vow at a time.”
