They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single ounce of it, and by the time the markets in Osaka were done with him he'd spent a lifetime proving the name right, laughing the whole way down. He aped the family fortune into a rice futures scheme some silk-tongued merchant swore was a sure floor, lost his sandals somewhere in the chaos of the crowd, and walked home barefoot with nothing left but the calluses to show for generations of samurai discipline. Somewhere between the shame and the blisters he found Buddha, or at least a very convincing statue of him, and declared himself devoted to the quiet life, meditation, minimalism, the works. He lasted four days before he was betting incense sticks on which one would burn down first, still barefoot, still grinning, still deceptively fast for a man built like a temple bell. Fat Bob never got the sandals back, and he never quite got the discipline either, but he'll tell you with total sincerity that enlightenment is right around the corner, probably past the next dice game.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
