They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single syllable of it, back when he was just a lean nobody with a borrowed blade, and somewhere along the way he decided the cruelest thing he could do was prove them right. On Degens Path, half-drunk on plum wine and the attention of strangers, he stood atop a crate and fished shamelessly for compliments about his form, his footwork, his totally-not-fading discipline, and when the crowd only laughed he felt something old and samurai-shaped crack open in his chest. So he swore, right there between the noodle cart and a man passed out on his own kimono, that he would become honorable again, truly honorable, the kind of fighter whose name meant something other than a punchline. It has been going slowly. He meditates for four minutes before the weed kicks in, bows respectfully to his opponents right before he ganks their floor price in a side bet, and insists this is all part of the path, whatever that means. Still, underneath the gut and the giggling and the compliments he can't stop begging for, there's a blade that remembers how to be still, waiting patiently for Fat Bob to catch up to it.
Heavy. Deliberate. The Gold Earring fighters wear their conviction in precious metal on the outside so everyone knows before they speak.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Demon woman, half revealed. The Hannya Half Mask fighters show the monstrous half and keep the human half private.
Elevated tradition. The High Straw Rice Hat fighters dress high above their own heads — everything they do is reaching upward.
