They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single scar, and somewhere on the slopes of Mount Koriyoka he decided the name had earned him back, so why fight it. He'd sat cross-legged across from Igor with a jug of shochu and a fistful of koku he couldn't afford to lose, laughing at his own bad hands like the punchline was older than the mountain itself. Somewhere between the fourth toast and the fifth terrible bet, a dealer's careless word about his honor landed wrong, and Fat Bob's laugh didn't change but his eyes did, and Igor suddenly remembered why men twice his size still called this jolly fat man sensei behind closed doors. He paid his debt, patted the dealer's shoulder like an old friend, and told everyone he was retiring to a quiet mountain hut to meditate, sharpen his blade, and finally get serious about discipline. He is, as of this telling, still at the table, three seats over, promising the quiet life starts right after this one last hand.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.

The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
