They called him Fat Bob before he ever earned it, back when he was just a lean blade with a temple name nobody remembers now, and somewhere between the wars ending and the sake starting he decided the nickname was a prophecy worth fulfilling. At the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, belly full of borrowed rice wine and pockets empty of anything resembling honor, he worked the crowd like a monk gone rogue, lifting coin purses off grandmothers who'd saved for a whole year to watch paper lanterns drift down the river. He tells himself it was performance art, samurai discipline repurposed into sleight of hand, but the truth is he just liked the weight of other people's yen more than the weight of his own conscience.
