Diary
They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned it, and then he spent thirty years of drinking, gambling, and floor-checking his own worth just to prove the name right, which is the kind of joke only a truly deceptive man can pull off with a straight face. Somewhere between a lost sword and a lost sobriety streak, he married a geisha right there in his own futon, no ceremony, no shrine, just candlelight and a promise he half meant and half aped from some old samurai code he barely remembered. Everyone said marriage would fix him, make him a good man, and for about a week it did, he even folded his own robes. But the issues came back like unpaid gambling debts, weed smoke curling under the door, sake bottles multiplying like rabbits, and his new wife sighing the sigh of someone who married a mountain and got an avalanche instead. Still, underneath all that soft, jolly, rugged fat is a blade that never forgot how to move, so pity the fool who mistakes his shame for weakness, Fat Bob included.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Movement made permanent. The Long Flowing fighters trail behind themselves in every room they enter — the hair arrives first, then the fighter.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
