They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned an ounce of it, and somewhere between the dojo bowing out and the vape pen bowing in, he decided the only honorable path left was to become exactly what the name promised. His shot at glory came dressed as a tournament bracket he'd aped into on a dare, floor seats to legend, and he trained for three whole days before the futon called his name louder than destiny did. Attempting greatness in his own bed, he discovered, mostly means falling asleep mid-kata with a bag of chips on his chest and waking up rugged by his own snoring, glory nowhere in sight. He tells the story now with a grin wide as a temple gate, chuckling about the sensei who once demanded discipline from a boy who now negotiates nightly with a mattress and loses every time. Still, some nights he lies there wondering what could have been, if the old warrior inside him had just stayed awake five minutes longer, and the thought makes him laugh so hard the futon creaks in solidarity.
