They called him Fat Bob before he'd even earned the belly, and somewhere along the way he figured fighting it was more work than just becoming it, so he leaned in with a grin and a second helping. Once he wore the two swords of a real samurai, disciplined as a shrine bell, but peace rusted him soft, and now the only drills he keeps are reps at the ramen stand and reps on the sake jug. Down at the Dojo yard he was busy admiring Goro thundering by on horseback, that magnificent unit of a horse, that magnificent unit of a man, jaw slack with degen awe, when some quick little rat of a thief slid the gold ring clean out of his ear like it was nothing. Fat Bob didn't even feel the tug, too busy aping his attention into someone else's flex, and by the time he noticed the lobe was bare the thief was three streets and several life choices away. He tells the story now with a laugh that shakes his whole gut, but underneath the joke sits real shame, the shame of a swordsman who once could hear a leaf fall behind him and now can't keep his own jewelry attached to his own head, another small failed vow to someday, someday, pay attention like he used to.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Turns toward light. The Silken Sunflower Kimono fighters move toward what sustains them without apology or explanation.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
The world through affection. The Loveheart Shades fighters see everything as worth caring about — and have found this is more effective than the alternative.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
