Fat Bob sat cross-legged beneath the sakura trees, trying to meditate the way the old sword masters once taught him, breathing in petals and out regret, and for about four glorious seconds he was a monk again instead of a man who once lost a floor bet on a coin he couldn't even spell. Then his stomach gurgled, his thoughts scattered like koi spooked by a rock, and mid-exhale he spat clean across the path onto a passer-by's brand new sandals, more accident than aim, though the stranger would insist otherwise for years to come. Bob apologized the way he does everything, with a booming laugh that suggested he might also flatten you if the mood shifted, which it did not, because underneath the belly and the bad breath is still the quiet, terrifying discipline of a man who used to end duels before they began. He tried again to arrange his thoughts, straightened his back, promised the blossoms and the gods and himself he'd sit still this time, and lasted exactly as long as it took to remember he'd left a joint half smoked back at the dojo steps.
