They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single pound of it, back when he was just a lean nobody swinging a bokken in the dojo yard, and somehow the name arrived early and he spent thirty years growing into the joke like it was destiny with a snack budget. Now he sits cross-legged at the main Buddhist temple, staring at a patch of grass with the intensity of a man who once meditated for enlightenment and now meditates mostly to avoid standing up too fast. The monks think he's cultivating inner stillness; in truth he's just recovering from last night's sake and a rigged dice game he definitely didn't lose on purpose, though the grass has started to look suspiciously like a floor chart trending downward. He tells himself this is the beginning of real discipline, day one of getting his life together, the samurai spirit returning at last, right after this nap in the sun. Somewhere under all that soft belly and softer resolve, though, there's still an old warrior nobody wants to test twice, because Fat Bob may look like a joke, but jokes that survived three wars tend to have teeth.'
