They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single scar, and by the time he was hauling his gut up the switchbacks of Mount Hotaka he'd made the name into something like a legend, or at least a warning. Halfway up the ridge, mid squabble with Ikari over whose turn it was to carry the last of the shochu, Bob peeled off his gi like it had personally insulted his ancestors, roaring about honor and altitude sickness in the same breath, bare belly catching the wind while startled hikers pretended not to stare. Ikari swung, Bob dodged with a grace nobody his size should own, and somewhere between a thrown sandal and a mountain goat's judgmental bleat, the fight ended in laughter instead of blood, the old samurai instincts flickering under all that softness like coals refusing to die. These days he claims he's reformed, hunched over sake-stained notebooks writing the Degen Handbook, chapter one titled
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
