Igor The Bear used to move like a landslide with patience, slow to start, impossible to stop, the kind of weight that made lesser men step aside before he even chose a direction. Then The English Pilot came calling, uncorked something foreign and lethal in Igor's own quarters, and talked in that clipped, needling accent until the bottle was empty and so was Igor's nerve. He remembers standing up to leave and simply not leaving, remembers the room tilting the way a ship does right before it decides to sink, remembers laughing at a joke he still cannot recall the shape of. In the morning he tried to rebuild the old discipline, cold water, cold floor, cold resolve, and made it exactly four minutes before the blanket won again. He has not been the same since, not ruined, just permanently, comically dented, a boulder with a new crack that whistles faintly whenever the wind of regret blows through it.”
