Diary
Igor The Bear moved through the old world like glacier through rock, slow enough that men mistook him for patient, and there was a night, high moon fat and stupid over the castle walls, when the shogunate itself sat waiting on his next step. Then Masumi opened her mouth, poured sake into his ear like honey into a trap, and something in Igor that had taken decades to build up momentum simply stopped, the way boulders stop, permanently and without apology. He does not blame the moon or the sake, mostly the sake, and he has decided, in the unhurried way he decides everything, that his reputation will be earned back one heavy, dragging step at a time. Every morning he vows discipline, meditation before dawn, no cups touched till duty is done, and every morning by noon he is face down in a dice game somewhere near the dojo floor, snoring like a landslide. Still he gets up, eventually, always eventually, because a bear interrupted is not a bear defeated, just a bear taking the long, degenerate road back to the mountain.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
