Diary
Igor The Bear did not fall in Sekigahara, did not fall to steel or spear, but to a beetle no bigger than a sake cup, in the back room of a whorehouse in Yoshiwara where the smart money never sat on him twice. Teeth scattered like dice on the floorboards, and the old girls swept them up laughing, and Igor said nothing, because Igor rarely says anything until the saying is already three days overdue. He tells himself, slow as a landslide deciding which village to bury, that discipline is a mountain and he is simply taking the long path up it, one grudging step, one missed morning meditation, one more cup of shochu "for the joints" at a time. The other fighters place bets on whether he will actually train or just sit in the dojo yard glaring at his own reflection until the reflection apologizes first. He will get his reputation back the way glaciers get anywhere, which is to say eventually, and God help the beetle that is still smug about it when he does.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Sovereignty in fabric form. The Queeny Chic fighters dress with authority that was never granted by anyone else and therefore can't be revoked.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
