Igor The Bear was honorable once, back when a man arranged his thoughts on horseback and let the road do the sorting, hooves keeping better time than any of his old teachers ever managed. Now the horse is long gone, sold for a jar of weed and a promise he never kept, and Igor arranges his thoughts the way a boulder arranges a hillside, which is to say slowly and only after everything downhill has already given up. He tells himself discipline is just momentum you haven't started yet, then spends the morning proving otherwise, three bong rips deep before he remembers he meant to meditate. The dojo mat still calls to him some mornings, faint as a bell through fog, and every so often he actually rolls toward it before gravity and a good couch win the argument again. Igor lives one day at a time because trying for two would collapse something load-bearing in him, and even a mountain, he figures, deserves the dignity of moving on its own terms.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
