Diary
Snow fell heavy over the old road where Igor the Bear once stood guard with a blade and a code, and now stands with numb fists and a worse idea forming slow as glacier melt. He robs the passing degens not for the coin so much as the ritual of it, the crunch of boots, the way his breath fogs like incense before a shrine he no longer keeps. Somewhere between the third mugging and the fourth, buried under all that mass and quiet, the master plan arrives, unhurried, inevitable, the way avalanches arrive after they've already decided. He tells himself this time will be different, that he'll take the winnings and finally rebuild the discipline the wars ground out of him, meditate at dawn, sharpen the old steel, but the sake finds him first and the plan just sits there like Igor himself, too heavy to start and too heavy to stop. By the time the snow melts he hasn't moved an inch closer to honor, only proven again, gloriously, gruffly, that he is a true Degen, immovable in all the wrong directions.
Sober, unlike the drunk variant. The Lizard fighters have a companion with excellent judgment who never asks for anything and always seems to know when to leave.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for the legendary fighter. The Red Heihachi fighters carry that name's weight in every match and find it light.
