Igor the Bear used to be the kind of man who walked into a room like the room owed him money, all swagger and cracked-knuckle confidence, right up until the night he stared down Oleg out in the cold and felt something in his chest slide sideways and never quite slide back. He tells people it was a draw. It was not a draw. Now he moves through the dojo like a glacier deciding whether the mountain is worth the trouble, slow to rise off the mat, slower to admit the fear that Oleg planted in him like a splinter of ice, and once he gets going nothing short of the apocalypse or an empty jug of vodka will stop his momentum. He still hasn't told his family what happened out there, tells himself it's discipline, the old samurai kind, the silent-suffering kind, but really he just knows his mother will ask why a two-hundred-pound bear needed three shots of soju to fall asleep that week. Some nights he sits with his weed and his memories and thinks about writing the letter explaining it all, and some nights, most nights, he just sits, heavy and warm and unmoving, letting the truth harden slowly like sap into amber.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for something specific. The Cet Kimono fighters know what they're wearing and why — the rest is for others to figure out.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Floor-mat helmet. The Tatami Kabuto fighters made armor from the training floor itself — they carry the place they trained in wherever they go.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
