Diary
Igor The Bear does not do anything quickly, not even losing things, so it took the better part of an afternoon for his sandals to vanish somewhere in the dirt while he was busy teasing Yuuki, poking at the boy's footwork like a glacier needling a pebble. By the time he noticed his feet were bare, the sun had moved and so had his patience, though patience for Igor moves the way continents do. He grunted about it the way he grunts about everything, a low sound that used to mean discipline back when he was a samurai who could stand still for hours and call it meditation, and now mostly means he has misplaced something again, usually his shoes, sometimes his morals. Standing there barefoot in the dirt, he decided, with the slow certainty of a boulder deciding to finally roll downhill, that he was done with cheap thrills and cheaper sake and would chase healthier pleasures instead. He has been deciding that for three days now, each decision heavier and slower than the last, and the sandals are still missing, and so, more or less, is the plan.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The woven face-cover of the wandering monk. The Tengai Basket fighters reveal nothing above the shoulders and everything through how they move.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
