Igor doesn't tell the story of how he earned the title Veteran, and nobody at the Nagoya docks was fool enough to ask twice. He went to the water that morning to fish for compliments, gold hoop catching the light like bait, and someone in the crowd bit harder than expected, walking off with his earring while his back was turned toward the tide. He didn't chase. A veteran doesn't chase what's already gone, he just recalculates the loss and keeps his footing. He'd meant it as the day he finally reined in the vanity, one small act of discipline before the whiskey hour, and instead the sea took his gold and left him the lesson raw. Igor says he regrets nothing, and the room goes quiet, because arguing with a man who lost an earring and gained a legend is a losing trade.”
