Diary
Igor does not tell the story of how he earned the title Veteran, and nobody in the dojo asks twice. Before Okiyo, before the ribs, he kept a code sharper than his blade, rose before dawn, ate rice and nothing else, called it discipline. Then BBQ Ben set a plate of lacquered brisket in front of him under the paper lanterns of Okiyo, and the code went the way of every rugged promise a man makes to himself. He still trains at dawn, still says little, but there is a smoker's ring in his gut now where honor used to sit alone. He can do better, he tells the room once, low and final, and the room believes him even as he orders seconds.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Memento mori made fashionable. The Skull Kimono fighters remember what's at stake and wear the reminder so they never forget.
The other Igor — the lean one, who earned the word Veteran inside the dojo rather than bringing it with him. He's never explained what it refers to, and nobody's asked twice.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ceremony interrupted. The Disheveled Geisha fighters started something formal and ended something entirely different.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
