The sake house had gone quiet the way rooms do when Igor The Veteran walks in, and he let the silence work for him while he leaned toward the woman at the end of the bar. Three degens tried to cut in with bad jokes and worse breath, expecting to be waved off like smoke, but Igor only studied them the way he once studied enemy lines, and something in his stillness made them stay. By the time the sake was gone he had not closed the deal with the woman, but he had somehow closed one with the degens, who now called him brother and meant it. He sat back against the wall, katana leaned same as always, and thought about how a man trained for discipline ends up counting floor prices with strangers instead of counting his breath like his old masters taught. The woman left with someone else eventually, the degens stayed, and Igor said nothing, because a real veteran knows some battles you lose quietly and call it training for the next war.
