Mount Fuji sat cold and indifferent the day Igor decided he was ready for Goro, and the mountain has not let him forget it since. He remembers the calculation he made in that half second, the arrogance of it, the way his blade felt certain in his hand right up until it wasn't. Nobody at the Dojo asks him about it twice, not because he threatens them, but because the silence after the first question is answer enough. These days he tries to keep the old discipline, wakes before dawn to drill forms in the frost, and still ends most nights three cups deep in sake telling the fire what he should have done differently. The title of Veteran was not given to him for winning that day on the mountain, it was given for what he carries since, and he carries it the way stone carries weather, without complaint and without forgetting.”
