Mist sat low over the training yard the morning Igor The Veteran ruined his last clean kimono, three cups of cheap sake and a gambling debt working through him before the sun cleared the pines. He did not curse. He never curses. He just stood there, soaked and steaming, and let the silence do what his temper used to do for him back when discipline was a coin he had not yet spent down to nothing. The younger fighters wanted to laugh, saw his face, and thought better of it. Later he sat alone by the koi pond, weighing a future that once meant mastery and now means keeping his hands steady long enough to fold a robe, and he asked no one in particular what a man does when the only battle left is against his own floor. Nobody answered him. Nobody ever does, and Igor has stopped expecting they will, though some mornings he still checks.
