Igor doesn't tell the story often, and when he does it's short, the way everything he says is short. Drank with The English Pilot among the trees outside some town nobody remembers the name of, and somewhere in that haze his patience, the last discipline he had left from the old dojo days, finally rugged itself and walked off without him. He doesn't blame the sake or the Pilot's endless chatter about routes and floors and glory; he blames the years, the wars that ended and left men like him standing in fields with nothing left to guard. So he went to the trees and stayed there, a hermit now, and calls it training, though the only thing he's mastered is silence and the art of not asking for company. Every dawn he sits in the stillness meaning to meditate like the old masters, and every dawn he ends up sharpening the same blade he never uses, which is its own kind of quiet failure he has stopped pretending to fix.aged story.
