Diary
Junichiro was the first son of a house that once measured honor in the angle of a bow, and he still measures everything, the pour of sake, the fold of a robe, the exact millisecond a blade should clear its saya, holding himself to the harshest ruler of all. So it stung him more than anyone that his most disciplined heist, a clean robbery of drunk degens at the men's pleasure house, went sideways the instant a house monkey leapt for his coin purse and he answered on pure reflex, stabbing the poor creature before his brain caught up to his sword. He has since declared this an unacceptable breach of form, the sort of amateur chaos that plagues men who never learned to floor their own impulses, and he is now hunched over parchment by candlelight drafting the Degen Handbook, a rulebook meant to bring order to a tribe that trades weed for coin and coin for nothing at all. Chapter one is titled Do Not Stab the Wildlife, chapter two is titled Discipline Is Not Optional, and he rewrites both nightly, grading his own conduct against a standard no one else in the dojo even pretends to meet. Deep down he knows the samurai in him is being slowly rugged by the degen in him, and that the handbook is less a guide for others than a desperate, doomed ledger of the man he is failing, hour by hour, to become again.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
