Diary
Junichiro once measured every stroke of his blade against his father's ledger of perfection, and even in ruin he cannot stop measuring. Under the bridge, hood pulled low, he told two idle ronin that the dojo's finest swordsman wept before every duel, a rumor he polished the way he once polished technique, syllable by syllable until it gleamed. He told himself it was strategy, a feint, the kind of psychological cut his old sensei would have respected, but the truth is he simply liked watching lesser men flinch at his precision. When the gossip rippled back to him twisted and cruel, stripped of nuance, he felt something crack that used to be called honor, and instead of shame he felt, absurdly, relief, like a obi finally loosened after years of correct posture. Now he sits by the river with a warm can of chuhai, grading his own dishonesty on a scale of one to ten, furious that even his fall from grace was only an eight, and vowing, as always, to do better tomorrow, though tomorrow he will grade that vow a failure too.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Organization ink made visible. The Black Yakuza Sleeves fighters belong to something — a code, a history — and they advertise their membership without speaking.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Insect mastery. The Kung Fu Beetle fighters move in patterns that look inefficient until they aren't. The beetle is not decorative.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
