Junichiro had built his whole life on precision, the exact angle of a bow, the exact measure of a man's worth, and so when he saw Goro slouching through the crowded street of Kyoto with sake on his breath and floor-price jokes on his lips, the words left him before he could weigh them properly. He called Goro a disgrace to the old dojo, loud enough for merchants and pigeons alike to hear, and the moment the sentence finished he felt the familiar itch of having failed his own impossible standard. Now he sits seiza in his room, wakizashi laid before him on a silk cloth he ironed twice, drafting an apology-slash-death-note with the same obsessive red ink he once used to grade his juniors' katas. He keeps rewriting the opening line, insists the calligraphy must be flawless before he can even consider disemboweling himself, and three hours later he has produced eleven discarded drafts and zero seppuku. Somewhere Goro is still laughing, blissfully unaware he was ever the reason a proud first son nearly ended it all over a comma.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
