Junichiro had rehearsed the ninja encounter in his mind a thousand times before it happened, every angle of the blade calculated, every footfall measured against the tatami like a ledger that must balance, and still he put his heel through the shoji doors on the very first exchange, the paper screen sighing open like a rice-paper wound behind him. He tells himself it was the moonlight's fault, or the ninja's cowardly footwork, but he knows precision is not something you get to blame on the weather; a first son does not miss, and yet he missed, loudly, splinter and all. Now he does not leave the Dojo, insists it is discipline, insists he is drilling stances at dawn to atone, though anyone watching would call it hiding with better posture. He still critiques the other fighters' forms from the doorway he refuses to walk past, grading their sloppy footwork while quietly avoiding the one broken threshold that grades him back every time he looks at it. Some nights he aped into a little weed just to stop replaying the sound of tearing paper, swore it was medicinal, swore tomorrow he'd finally step through and rebuild what he rugged with his own foot, and tomorrow, predictably, becomes another day he measures everyone but crosses no doors at all.
A paper earring from the Dojo itself. Fragile. Replaceable. The fighters who wear them understand that what looks disposable can last forever.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Named for sensation. The Splitting Axe Ache fighters' hair is named for how their opponents feel after they're done.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
