There is a version of Junichiro who died out in the cold, chasing yield on a promise that turned out to be smoke, and there is the one who walked back into town wearing that death like a cheap coat, calm as a pond nobody's thrown a stone into yet. Before the frost took whatever it took, he was a great man, the kind villagers used as a measuring stick for other men, and he remembers this the way you remember a dream you're not sure was yours. Now he introduces himself as Junichiro Reborn, no last name needed, and tells anyone who'll sit still long enough that retirement from ruin is its own kind of discipline, the hardest sword he's ever tried to hold steady. He means to meditate at dawn, to never chase another cold promise again, and most mornings he manages exactly one of those before the dice come out and the old hunger for easy money slides back in like it never left. Still, he smiles the smile of a man who has already lost everything once and found that surviving it is its own quiet punchline, and he keeps telling the story slightly differently each time, as if daring the past to argue back.
