Junichiro measured every man in the dojo by the set of his jaw, and found most of them wanting, so when the elders whispered that pain revealed character he decided to prove his own beyond dispute. Alone in the dojo latrines, by the light of a single guttering candle, he gripped his own molar with iron pliers and pulled, grading the wince on his face as harshly as he graded everyone else's technique, docking himself points for the tremor in his hand. The other fighters heard the low, controlled grunt through the thin walls and mistook it for meditation, and when he emerged pale and bleeding but standing perfectly straight, they bowed lower than they ever had before. He tells himself now, over a bowl of gas station instant ramen and a joint he swore he would not finish before noon, that discipline is discipline whether it is a blade or a pair of rusty pliers, though he has not managed to floss in three days and it eats at him more than the missing teeth ever did. Status earned, he says, tapping the gap with his tongue, is still status, even when the ledger of your own body no longer balances the way you promised it would.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Half the statement. The Skull Sleeve fighters communicate their philosophy in one arm — the other arm is for whatever needs doing next.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
