Diary
One-Eyed Itsuki never needed two eyes to see trouble coming, only the one, and that one watched the monkey lift his sake cup clean off the table at the Dojo Towers while The English Pilot roared with laughter loud enough to rattle the paper walls. Itsuki did not laugh. He set down his cup with the same calm he once used to sheath a blade after a clean cut, drew steel with a hand that had not shaken since the wars, and put the thief down before the Pilot even finished his toast. There was a long silence, then applause from the wrong crowd, and Itsuki realized with quiet disgust that a man seeking discipline had just knifed a monkey over rice wine in front of witnesses. He is retreating to the jungle now, telling himself it is meditation, though anyone with one working eye can tell it is exile with better scenery. Half the world he sees twice as clear, and both halves agree he has some apologizing to do to whatever monkeys remain.”
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
The disguise is the identity. The Degen Superhero glasses fighters have a secret — or maybe the secret is that there's no secret and they've always been exactly this.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
