One-Eyed Itsuki lost his depth perception in some forgotten skirmish years ago, but he still claims he sees more than most men with two good eyes, and at the Kurayami Darkness Festival, surrounded on all sides by giggling courtesans pressing sake into his hands and secrets into his ear, he saw exactly what was coming and still couldn't stop it. In the pitch black of that lantern-snuffed night, hands grabbing at his sleeves from every direction he couldn't fully track, the old discipline that once held a blade steady at dawn abandoned him entirely, and his body did what disciplined samurai are never supposed to do in front of an audience. He tells it now without flinching, the same flat calm he uses for everything, one eye steady on whoever's listening: the courtesans screamed louder than he did, and somewhere in that chaos he understood that dignity is just another floor that can get rugged out from under you in an instant. He still trains every morning, katas slow and precise, chasing the discipline he buried under years of sake and worse, and he still loses that fight most days, but he's stopped pretending the loss surprises him. Half his world comes in twice as clear these days, he says, and the other half just reminds him to always know where the nearest outhouse is.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for what it abandoned. The No Honor Kimono fighters gave up on the codes others follow and found that this freed them completely.
'Itsuki' — a tree, deep roots and one straight trunk. He lost the eye in a story he tells four different ways depending on how much he likes you, and what's left sees more than most manage with two.
