Diary
Serious Oleg ascended Mount Hotaka under a vow he considered sacred: for the duration of the climb, by dojo decree and some drunken bet he refuses to revisit, he would play a female. He did not treat this as a joke. He treated it as bushido. Every step was measured, every breath a discipline, his voice pitched into an octave he maintained with the grim focus of a man defusing a bomb, and by the second switchback his jaw ached from the effort of never once slipping. The other fighters laughed themselves breathless along the ridge, passing a joint and calling out encouragement he did not acknowledge, because encouragement was not the point, honor was the point, and Oleg does not do bits, Oleg does oaths. By the summit he was hollow-eyed and trembling, more miserable than he had been in any war he actually fought, and he stood there in the wind swearing through gritted teeth that he would reclaim his old iron discipline starting tomorrow, a promise he has now broken, with total seriousness, one hundred and forty consecutive times.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Architecture on the scalp. Each knot a decision. The Black Bantu Knots fighters make their choices visible at the top, where everyone can see.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Snapped, but still swung. The Broken Naginata fighters lost half the reach and none of the conviction — they simply stand closer now.
