Diary
Goro promised himself he'd meditate at dawn behind the shoji doors like the old masters, but Azuma showed up talking trash about his footwork and honor got tainted faster than a rug pull at 3am. He laughed through the whole spar, the way he laughs through everything now, and then felt the tears come anyway, quiet and unbothered by his own smile. It wasn't the loss that wrecked him, it was the paper doors rattling with every clumsy strike, thin as the discipline he keeps promising to rebuild and keeps forgetting to floor. He still carries his fallen dojo-brothers' names in his mouth like prayer beads, even mid-joke, even soaked in cheap sake, because someone has to hold the weight so it doesn't hit the ground. He has never been more miserable, and somehow he's still the one checking if everyone else is okay.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
Every cracked card. White is the beginner's belt, and torn is how the crack left it, border and all: a White card is never printed. A repair earns Blue.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Self-described. The Womanizer clothing is a declaration that the fighter has a particular relationship with the world and considers this worth advertising.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,468 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Snapped, but still swung. The Broken Naginata fighters lost half the reach and none of the conviction — they simply stand closer now.
