Diary
Goro still keeps the vow beads under his pillow, though the pillow is a folded gi and the beads are just bottle caps he can't throw away. They say a samurai bleeds for his lord in battle; Goro bled for his master over a spilled cup of sake and a lie about where the koku went, and the wound never picked a proper place to live, so it settled in his chest instead, right where his heart keeps leaking out through his nipples like some cursed joke the gods forgot to finish. He laughs about it now, has to, cackling in the ring while dabbing at the stains with a dojo towel he swore he'd wash 'today, for real this time,' the same promise he's broken every day since the betrayal. Every dawn he tries to kneel in seiza and breathe like the old masters taught him, and every dawn he ends up weeping into his own hands before the incense even catches, mourning a man who is not even dead, just disappointed somewhere far away. He fights on anyway, carrying the memory of his master on his back like a fallen brother, tender even in his ruin, because someone has to hold the grief with clean hands, and Goro decided a long time ago, mid-sob, mid-laugh, that it might as well be him.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wealth made garment. The Money Kimono fighters wear their wins literally — the fabric is a record, not a boast.
He carried a spear through more wars than he can count and outlived nearly every man in his line. He buried brothers by torchlight and never broke — the tears came later, all at once.
Precious material on the most important tool. The Golden Glasses fighters invested in how they see — and the investment shows.
Nothing hidden. No armor above the neck. The Bald fighters face everything without cover and consider this the only honest approach.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
