📖 Teary Goro's Story

Goro carried a spear through more wars than he can count, and outlived nearly every man who ever stood in his line. He was the one they sent when a position had to hold, because Goro did not break. He buried brothers by torchlight, poured sake for their ghosts, and marched again at dawn. Then the wars just ended. No banners, no siege, no line left to hold, and a warrior with nothing left to guard is only a man with a very sharp stick and far too much free time. So he drifted into the dojo like the rest: cheap sake, crooked dice, nobody asking what you did in the war. He will win a stupid hand of cards, the whole table roaring, and right in the middle of the laughter his eyes go to glass and the tears fall. Not from sadness, exactly. Goro cries because he is the last man still carrying all of them, and grief, unlike a war, never signs a treaty. He holds a disciplined stoic face for exactly as long as it takes someone to be kind to him, which so far stands at a personal best of eleven seconds.
