Yuji The Wise once kept a ledger of his own virtues, a peaceful man who believed enlightenment was simply a matter of good posture and better manners, until an unspeakable incident in the dojo latrines rewrote every line of that ledger in a single afternoon. He does not name what happened there, only that he emerged a different scholar, one who now footnotes his own dignity and reads other men's confidence as a rough draft badly in need of editing. The old Yuji would have meditated the shame away by sunrise; the new Yuji instead narrates it aloud at the sake house, turning humiliation into folklore because a story survives longer than a grudge. He still tries, every dawn, to reclaim the discipline of his samurai years, sitting seiza with a scroll and a resolve that lasts exactly as long as his hangover allows. Call it humility, call it trauma with excellent prose, Yuji calls it material, and keeps writing himself back together one chapter at a time.
