Diary
Yuji The Wise once approached the whetstone the way old monks approached scripture, cataloguing every angle of the blade with a scholar's reverence, and for a good hour in the Meiji Jungle he was, by his own admission, magnificent. Then the sake gourd he'd packed for 'ceremonial purposes' opened, and the commentary in his head shifted from treatise on steel to slurred footnotes about how the moonlight looked exactly like the moonlight the night before. He recorded, with the last steady hand he had, that the swords were flawless, the philosophy was sound, and he himself was no longer capable of standing near either without listing sideways into a fern. Discipline, he informed a nearby cricket, is a chapter he fully intends to write again once the room stops rotating. By dawn he lay among his gleaming, useless-to-him blades, calling it liberation, though liberation had never before smelled quite so strongly of rice wine and regret.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
It's been that kind of day. The Bloody Mess clothing doesn't mean the fighter lost — it means they were in it deep enough that cleanliness became irrelevant.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Still wearing them. The Bloodied Glasses fighters need nothing to be clean to keep seeing clearly.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
