Yuji The Wise likes to tell it as a parable, the way chroniclers do when the truth is a little embarrassing: a boy trimming cherry blossoms at the fish market, pruning petals between the mackerel stalls, somehow mistaken for a warrior in training and handed a blade before he could correctly identify a sword's business end. He accepted the role the way he accepts most things now, by narrating it so thoroughly that the narration becomes the qualification, and soon enough he was a fighter who footnotes his own footwork mid-swing. These days he seeks advice about his future the way a man consults a map he printed himself, asking elder monks, ronin at the tavern, even the fishmonger who started this whole affair, though he privately suspects he's just farming opinions to cite later. He swore off drink to sharpen his focus for this quest, lasted exactly one evening, and has since footnoted that failure too, filing it under 'further research required.' Still, there's something almost noble in a man who lost his nerve choosing to chronicle the losing instead of hiding it, one wilted cherry blossom and one badly aped decision at a time.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
