Diary
Yuji The Wise had gone to the shrine at Kiyomizu seeking nothing grander than a quiet nod from the universe, some small confirmation that his katas still held elegance after all these sake-soaked months. Instead he found himself encircled by a ring of degens who smelled the fishing-for-compliments from three streets away, the way sharks smell the smallest cut. He narrated the ambush even as it happened, murmuring footnotes to himself about hubris and humility while they roasted his stance, his topknot, his entire spiritual trajectory since Sekigahara. A true scholar, he told himself, observes his own downfall with clarity, and so he catalogued each insult with the detached precision of a man annotating his own tombstone. He has not forgiven himself, not for the mockery, but for how badly he wanted it to be applause, and every night since he opens his journal meaning to write of discipline and instead writes, again, of degens, shrines, and the particular ache of a swordsman who now begs strangers to notice him.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Minimum. Clean. The Fight Gi fighters believe that preparation is visible in the garment — this one says the fighter has done this before.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
