Yuji The Wise once carried scrolls into battle so he could annotate his own victories before the blood dried, and now he carries a beach towel to a different kind of campaign, chronicling himself in real time for anyone within earshot. He drops artful little confessions into the surf air, "I suppose my form is passable," and waits, notebook of ego open, for the villagers to fill the margins with praise like a floor price he refuses to let dip. When the compliments come, thin and obligatory, he records them as triumphs anyway, a historian editing his own rug pull into a renaissance. He tells himself this ritual has made him humble, the same way a man convinces himself a losing hand at cards was really a lesson in patience, and he says it again louder so someone will agree. Somewhere between the tide and the weed haze drifting off some nearby degenerate's rolled leaf, Yuji scribbles a final line in his ledger of self, "today, humility, achieved," not noticing the seagulls are the only ones still listening.
