Historians will note, Yuji insists, that he was one ceremony away from the shogunate when he instead sprinted barefoot through the streets after a mistress who had already stopped looking back. He narrates this to anyone who will listen, and to several who won't, framing his own ruin with the detached cadence of a man footnoting a war he lost on purpose. There was a version of this story where discipline won, where the robes stayed on and the throne stayed his, but Yuji admits that version was always the fiction and the running was always the truth. Now he keeps a ledger of sake cups the way he once kept a ledger of decrees, vowing each dawn to write a new chapter of restraint and each dusk crossing it out in his own hand. He calls this scholarship. Everyone else calls it Tuesday.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Excess made armor. The Glutton Fight fighters wear their hunger on the outside — not for food, but for everything the Dojo offers.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
Chain-sickle, aged. The Rusty Kusarigama fighters have been in more fights than maintenance sessions.
