Diary
Yuji The Wise once kept meticulous scrolls on the virtues of bushido, footnotes and all, and now he keeps meticulous mental notes on the exact moment his honor left him somewhere along Degens Path. The courtesans there did not draw steel; they simply laughed at the right octave and asked if a man of his "wisdom" wanted to buy the floor before it dumped, and Yuji, ever the chronicler, narrated his own downfall in real time as he handed over his coin purse like a footnote to a much sadder chapter. He tells himself it was an ambush, a tactical failure worthy of study, though the truth he records privately is that he simply wanted to be flattered by someone who wasn't a scroll. Each morning he vows to return to discipline, to meditate before the sun, to skip the pipe passed around camp, and each morning by noon he is aped into another distraction, narrating his own hypocrisy with the same dry wit he once reserved for fallen shoguns. He has so many issues, he admits, that he has started numbering them like verses, and honestly, cataloguing the wreckage might be the closest thing to honor he has left.”
Not contacts. Not paint. Something older. The Shaman Eyes fighters see through the collection at a frequency others can't access, and they've been doing it since before the derug.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
