Yuji The Wise kept a ledger once, back when discipline meant something, back when a man's worth was measured in silence held rather than jokes released, and he narrates this fact to anyone within earshot as though footnoting his own decline. The turning point, he insists, was Mount Koriyoka, where he and Haru sat sharing a joint shaped suspiciously like poor judgment and laughed until the mountain itself seemed to lean in for the punchline. Yuji tells it now with the reverence of a scholar annotating scripture, gesturing at invisible scrolls, insisting he was a great man before that day, a man of ledgers and vows, not of giggling fits over Haru's terrible impressions. He still attempts discipline each morning, meditation posture perfect, mind already three thoughts deep into whether the dojo's floor price on respect has bottomed out, and by sunrise he has narrated himself straight into another nap. Ask him if he regrets it and he will simply smile, pleased as a man who rugged his own vows and somehow still calls it research.”
