Assassin Fuzen took the wager the way he took every contract: silently, patiently, certain of the outcome. He had only to keep his mouth shut for one evening at the main Buddhist temple in Kyoto, a simple clause, easy collateral against a stack of ryo he'd already spent in his head. Then the daimyo's wife made some idle remark about his posture, and the ancient blade in him answered before the modern degen could stop it, and the insult left his mouth clean as a drawn sword, cutting the bet in half and his dignity clean off. He has not closed that contract since, carrying the shame the way he carries every unfinished job, quietly, patiently, waiting for a night when discipline finally shows up to collect. Word around the dojo is he still bows to every temple he passes, half apology, half warning, as if silence, once broken, might still be renegotiated.'

'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
